VW Amarok Mirror Repair: Replace the Base or Hinge, Not the Whole Mirror
By Duber, The Car Mirror Man · Car Mirrors Australia · Updated October 2026 · 11 min read

Short answer: for VW Amarok mirror repair: when the mirror is hit, in about nine out of ten cases only the internal structure breaks: the mirror base or the internal joint and hinge. In our experience we can replace just that part instead of the whole assembly. It is one of our most popular repairs.
Need it fitted? We can fit a replacement mirror base on a ute at your home or work in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide — see how our mobile service works.
An Amarok is a work ute. It lives in car parks, on building sites and on tight suburban streets. Its mirrors get hit. The usual result is a mirror head hanging off the door by its wires, or flopping forward on a loose hinge.
That looks like a write-off. It usually is not. This guide shows what actually breaks, why the fix is smaller than most people expect, and what to send us for a price. It covers exterior side mirrors only. We do not repair or replace the interior rear-view mirror.
What happens when an Amarok mirror is hit
The Amarok is a mid-size pickup that has been sold as a single cab and a double cab [3]. The mirrors stand proud of the door, so they take the first hit in a tight spot.
When the mirror is struck, the force travels along the housing into the part that holds it to the door. That part is the base, with its internal joint and hinge. It often gives way first, so the door, the glass and the housing do not.

This is a real job from our own work. The mirror head hangs from its wiring because the base underneath has failed. The glass is whole. The housing is whole.
Nine in ten: the part inside is the part that breaks
That is our experience across the jobs we do. When an Amarok mirror is hit, in about 90% of cases the only part damaged is the internal base, joint or hinge. The glass and the outer shell come through. The structure inside does not.

Base, joint or hinge: what each one is
Think of it as a door hinge. When the hinge breaks you do not replace the whole door. You replace the hinge. The same idea applies here.
Why replacing only the base makes sense
A whole mirror assembly is a big, complete part. If only the base has failed, you pay for a new glass, a new housing and a new cover that you did not need.
Replacing the base and keeping the head means fewer new parts and a lower bill. It also means one small part to source, not a whole assembly. We need the right base for your ute.
The repair, in four steps
One clear photo of the mirror and one of the base where it meets the door.
We confirm the right base or joint for your Amarok and give you a fixed price.
Your driveway, your site or the car park.
We fit the new base, refit the head, and check the adjustment and fold.

VW Amarok mirror repair: what it costs
The price depends on the part and the model year, so we quote from your photo. As a guide, our standard price ladder looks like this.
| What you need | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mirror glass only | From $135 fitted | If only the glass is broken |
| Painted mirror cover | $150 to $300 | Matched to the ute’s colour |
| Base, joint or hinge | Quoted per vehicle | Often much less than a whole assembly |
| Whole assembly | Quoted per vehicle | Only when the damage is too wide to repair |

Does the cab type matter?
The Amarok comes as a single cab and a double cab [3]. The mirror base is tied to the model and the year, not just the cab. So the most useful things you can tell us are the year of your ute and which side is broken.
If you are not sure of the year, a photo of the compliance plate works, or just a clear photo of the whole ute from the front. We take it from there.
Why the base fails before the head
The mirror head is a closed shell with glass in the front. It spreads a knock across a wide area. The base is different. It is a smaller part with a joint inside, and it has to hold the whole head at the end of an arm.
A small force at the head becomes a large force at the base, like pushing on the end of a lever. That is why the base is so often the part that gives.
What to do the moment it happens
If the head hangs by its wires, do not drive on with it swinging.
The whole mirror, the base, and the empty mounting if the head has come away.
Put the head, glass and any bits in the cab. We may be able to reuse them.
We tell you the part and the fixed price.
The photos matter most. They let us match the base and tell you what is broken before anyone starts work.
Replace the base or the whole mirror: how to decide
| What you see | Replace the base | Replace the whole mirror |
|---|---|---|
| Glass intact, head loose or hanging | Yes | Not needed |
| Glass cracked as well | Base and glass | Not needed |
| Housing split or crushed | Sometimes | Often |
| Everything broken | No | Yes |
In about nine out of ten Amarok mirror hits, the first row is the one that applies. That is why a smaller repair is so often the right call.
Reusing the mirror head
When the base is the broken part, the head you already have can usually go back on. That keeps your original paint and your original glass. It also keeps the repair small.
Where the head is damaged too, we replace what is needed. The aim is always the same: fix the broken part, and leave the good parts on the ute.
Avoiding a repeat
A few small habits help. Fold the mirrors in when you park in a tight spot, if your ute folds them. Give gateposts and bollards a wider berth. Check the mirror position before you reverse.
If the mirror has been hit and seems fine, still check that it holds its position. A joint that has been weakened can fail on the next knock.
Three ways an Amarok mirror gets hit
These are examples of how it can happen. Whatever the cause, the photos tell us what is broken.
What “only the base” means for your bill
When only the base fails, the bill covers the base, not the whole assembly. You keep your head, your glass and your cover. There are fewer new parts to pay for.
We do not promise a fixed saving, because the part and the year decide the price. What we promise is a fixed price from your photos, given before we come out. Compare it with a whole-assembly quote and you will see the difference.
Can you claim an Amarok mirror on insurance?
Many drivers ask whether insurance will pay for a broken mirror. It depends on your policy, your excess and the cost of the repair. Our guide on whether insurance covers a broken side mirror goes through the questions to ask.
How the photo quote works
The whole mirror, the base and the empty mounting if the head has come off.
We match the base or joint to your Amarok’s year and side.
A fixed price, given before the work starts.
At your home, your site or the car park.
What we check on site before we fit the part
When we arrive, we do not just bolt on a part. We look first at what is left.
We check it is sound and clean, because a new base needs a good surface to sit on.
If the mirror is powered, we check the wires and the plug are intact.
We confirm they are undamaged and can go back on.
After fitting, we check the mirror holds its position and adjusts the way it should.
If we find something the photo did not show, we tell you before we do anything else.
Powered mirrors on a ute
Some Amarok mirrors adjust with a switch inside the cab. Some also fold electrically. Powered mirrors carry wires through the base, so the wiring is part of the job.
If your mirror is powered, tell us in your message, and say what still works. If it is the folding that has failed, our guide on a power folding mirror that is not working explains what to expect.
Where we work
We come to you in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, within the metro area. We do not travel to the Gold Coast or to regional areas, but we can ship parts. Every job follows the national rules for rear-vision mirrors [1].
Independent repairers can get the service information they need. Australian law requires car makers to share it on fair terms [2].
What customers tell us
Customers mention the same thing again and again: it was easy.
We come to you in five cities
Every job is mobile. We drive to your home, your work or the car park the car is sitting in, and the mirror is fitted and tested before we leave.
Frequently asked questions
My Amarok mirror is hanging off. Do I need a new mirror?
Usually not. In about nine out of ten cases, only the internal base, joint or hinge has broken. We can replace that part.
Is the glass still good?
Often, yes. When the base breaks, the glass and the outer shell frequently come through undamaged.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the part and the model year, so we quote a fixed price from your photo. Replacing just the base is often much less than a whole assembly.
Do you fit it at my ute?
Yes. We come to your home, your site or the car park.
What do I need to send?
A clear photo of the mirror and a photo of the base where it meets the door.
Do you replace the interior rear-view mirror?
No. We replace exterior side mirrors only.
Is this a common repair for you?
Yes. It is one of the most popular repairs we do.
Can you reuse my existing mirror head?
Often, yes. If the head and glass are undamaged, we replace the base and refit the head.
Does it matter which side is broken?
Yes. The driver and passenger bases are different parts. Tell us which side, and we match it.
My Amarok mirror is powered. Does that change the job?
A little. The wires pass through the base, so we check them when we fit the part. Tell us what still works when you send your photos.
Do I need to be there while you work?
Please check with us when you book. We confirm the details when we price the job.
Do you work outside the big cities?
We work in the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide metro areas only. We do not travel to regional areas, but we can ship parts.
