The Price Guide

Convex to Flat Conversion — What It Costs

The money-saver most drivers miss

If only the glass is cracked, don’t pay for a full mirror. Panel shops default to the full assembly. We assess for a glass-only fix first — often from $135. See our full cost guide for the detailed breakdown.

Why drivers choose us

Convex to flat side mirror glass conversion for drivers who want honest distances

Convex to flat side mirror glass conversion is one of our most requested jobs from older drivers, driving instructors, and anyone who finds the passenger-side mirror hard to judge. The factory-fitted convex glass gives a wider field of view but makes cars behind look further away than they really are — and for some drivers that's a genuine safety problem.

Conversion reality #1 — passenger-side is nearly always convex

In Australia, driver-side mirrors are typically flat and passenger-side mirrors are typically convex. Convex glass shows more of the lane at the cost of distorted distance. Some drivers prefer flat glass on both sides.

Conversion reality #2 — ADR 14/02 allows either

Both flat and convex passenger-side glass comply with Australian Design Rule 14/02 as long as they meet the required visibility angle. You're free to choose the one you prefer for how you drive.

Conversion reality #3 — older drivers ask for this most

Distance judgement changes with age. Convex distortion becomes harder to read. Converting to flat glass on the passenger side often solves the 'car looked further away than I thought' problem in one job.

Conversion reality #4 — simple, cheap, done in your driveway

Conversion is a glass-only swap. We remove the convex, fit flat, and you drive away with a mirror that reads distances honestly. Base cost from $135 at your address.

CONVEX TO FLAT MIRROR CONVERSION

The convex-to-flat conversion specialist — glass swap, nothing else moves

Convex mirror glass has real benefits (wider field of view) and real costs (distance distortion, difficulty judging closing speed). Older drivers, larger-vehicle drivers and drivers who’ve trained on flat glass their whole life often prefer flat. We convert convex to flat as a straightforward glass-only swap — we don’t touch the housing, motor, wiring, blind-spot LED, heating, indicator or camera. Every feature you had before, you have after. From $135 on standard vehicles — same price band as any other glass-only job.

FAQs

Convex to flat side mirror glass conversion for drivers who want honest distances — answered

Is a flat passenger mirror legal in Australia?

Yes — ADR 14/02 permits either flat or convex passenger-side glass, provided the mirror meets the required field-of-view angle. Converting to flat is legal.

How much does a conversion cost?

Base cost is from $135 for the glass and fit, mobile at your driveway. Some larger or premium mirrors sit slightly higher — send a photo for the exact quote.

Will a flat mirror show less?

Yes, marginally — flat glass shows the same distance but a narrower field. Cars behind will look their actual distance, not further away. Most drivers who convert find the trade-off worth it.

Do you convert driver-side to flat too?

Australian driver-side mirrors are already flat on most cars, so the question rarely comes up. If yours is convex on the driver side (some imports), yes we can swap it.

Can I go back to convex if I don't like it?

Yes — the original glass can be refitted or a factory convex re-ordered. Best approach is to try flat for a week; most drivers find it much easier to read distances.

How long does the conversion take?

20–30 minutes at your driveway. Glass-only job — no motor, wiring or housing work needed.
