Side Mirror Repair — Melbourne
A side mirror is an assembly of separate parts, and the one that fails is rarely the one you would replace. Car Mirror Man assesses the mirror on your car, on your driveway, and repairs what has actually broken rather than replacing the lot.
Loose housings, snapped clips, failed fold motors, hanging glass and cracked covers are all repairable on a large share of vehicles. We tell you honestly when they are not.
As Featured In
Side mirror repair in Melbourne begins with a question almost nobody is asked at the quoting stage: which part actually failed? A mirror that rattles, hangs or will not hold its position is usually one broken clip or one dead motor away from working perfectly again.
Melbourne is hard on mirrors. Tram-line traffic squeezing past parked cars, the narrow one-way streets of Carlton and Fitzroy, and multi-storey carparks with columns in awkward places all take their toll — and most of that damage lands on one part, not the whole assembly.

What can usually be repaired
Repair is not always possible, and we will say so. But the failures below are repairable far more often than a default replacement quote suggests.
Usually broken mounting clips or a worn pivot. The housing, glass and electronics are all fine and the mirror holds firm again once the clips are renewed.
The adjuster gearbox has slipped or stripped. That gearbox is a separate part from the glass and from the fold motor.
Common on cars parked on tight streets. The fold mechanism is its own module and comes out without touching the glass.
The backing plate clips have let go. New backing plate and glass, housing untouched.

What repair costs against replacement
A repair is quoted from the part that failed. That is the whole point — you pay for a clip set or a motor rather than for a complete mirror with a motor, glass, indicator and cover you did not need.
| What is broken | What we do | Typical cost* |
|---|---|---|
| Glass only | Correct ADR-compliant glass cut and fitted to your existing backing plate. | from $135 |
| Cover / housing | Outer cap swapped, glass and motor kept. | $150–$300 |
| Full mirror, plain | Whole assembly, manual or basic powered mirror. | $200–$350 |
| Full mirror, powered | Electric adjust, power fold or integrated indicator. | $350–$500 |
| Blind-spot, camera or auto-dim | Mirrors carrying driver-assist electronics. | Quoted per vehicle |
*Indicative bands. Repairs are quoted per vehicle once we have seen the fault. Send a photo and we will tell you straight whether it is a repair or a replacement. Every band here comes from our national price guide — the single source of truth for what we charge. Read the full side mirror replacement cost guide.
Ask any quote you receive one question: which part has actually failed? If the answer is a clip, a gearbox or a motor, then a whole-assembly price is charging you for four working parts to replace one broken one.
The Anatomy
What’s inside a car side mirror
Five parts that can fail independently — and only one that’s usually broken. That’s where the money-saver hides.

The 5 layers of a modern car side mirror — when only layer 1 is broken, you only pay for layer 1.
When repair is not the right answer
We would rather tell you the mirror needs replacing than sell you a repair that will not hold. These are the cases where replacement is genuinely the better value.
If the casting that bolts to the door has broken, nothing clips to it reliably. That is a replacement.
Once the loom is pulled apart inside the door, a new assembly with an intact plug is faster and cheaper than chasing individual wires.
Cover, glass and motor all gone in one impact usually adds up past the cost of a complete unit.
Driver-assist hardware is not repaired in the driveway. We quote the correct assembly per vehicle.
Why choose Car Mirror Man in Melbourne
Glass, cover, motor and indicator are separate parts. We only ever change what is actually broken.
ADR-compliant automotive mirror glass, cut here — so we are never forced into a full-assembly-only part.
Home, work or the station carpark. Glass-only fits from outside, so the car can stay locked.
In writing. Unlimited on mirror glass for as long as you own the vehicle, three years on a full mirror assembly, twelve months on an individual replacement part.

Side mirror repair Melbourne — your questions answered
Can a side mirror actually be repaired, or is it always replaced?
Very often it can be repaired. A mirror is an assembly of separate parts — glass, backing plate, cover, fold motor, adjuster gearbox, indicator — and usually only one has failed. We assess on site and repair what is broken.
How much does side mirror repair cost in Melbourne?
It depends entirely on which part failed. Glass-only work starts at $135. A cover is $150 to $300. Repairs to clips and motors are quoted per vehicle once we have seen the fault.
My mirror is loose and rattles. Is that repairable?
Usually yes. A rattling mirror is most often broken mounting clips or a worn pivot, and both are replaceable without a new mirror.
The mirror will not fold in any more. Can you fix that?
In most cases. The fold motor is its own module and can be replaced without disturbing the glass or the cover.
Do you come to my home or work?
Yes. We are mobile across the Melbourne metro and work wherever the car is parked.
How quickly can you get to me?
Most metro suburbs are same day or next day, depending on the part. We confirm when we quote.
What if it turns out it cannot be repaired?
We tell you before any work starts, and quote the replacement instead. You are never charged for a repair we could not complete.
Is a rattling or hanging mirror illegal to drive with?
A mirror that does not give a clear rearward view can fail a roadworthy and can attract a defect. If it is hanging or the glass is gone, get it looked at rather than left.
