Aftermarket vs Genuine Side Mirrors: Which Do You Need?

Short answer: it depends entirely on which part. Plain mirror glass from a quality aftermarket supplier is genuinely equivalent, and correct curvature matters far more than the badge. Driver-assist glass, blind-spot modules and unusual colour-matched covers are where genuine earns its price. A specialist should tell you which of those you are in before ordering anything.

This is the second question almost every customer asks, and it usually gets a lazy answer in both directions. Some workshops say genuine always, which is safe and expensive. Some say aftermarket always, which is cheap and occasionally wrong. Neither is a diagnosis. A side mirror is four separate parts, and the honest answer changes for each one.
What “genuine” actually means
Worth defining, because the word is used loosely and the difference between the three categories is real.
Most of the argument people have is really between the second and fourth of those, which are wildly different things sharing one word.
Mirror glass: aftermarket is genuinely fine
The part that breaks most often is also the part where the distinction matters least.

A piece of mirror glass has three properties that matter: the curvature, the size and shape of the backing plate, and whether the heating element and its connector match. Get those three right and there is no functional difference between a quality aftermarket panel and a genuine one.
What there is not, on plain glass, is any electronics, coding, calibration or paint. Nothing is model-locked in software. That is why the price gap between genuine and aftermarket glass is so much larger than the actual difference in the part.
Curvature is the thing that actually matters
If you take one technical point from this article, take this one.
Side mirror glass is not flat. Passenger-side glass in Australia is convex, which widens the field of view and shrinks apparent distance — the reason for the warning printed on it [5]. Driver-side glass is flat or very mildly curved on most vehicles.
The curvature is specified per model. Fit a panel with the wrong radius and it will physically fit the housing, look correct in the driveway, and distort distance on the freeway in a way you notice at 100km/h and not before.
Heated glass: check the connector, not the badge
A step up in complexity, and still usually an aftermarket-is-fine answer.
Resistance and coverage. A mismatched element either does not clear the glass or draws wrong.
Spade type, spacing and polarity. This is where cheap parts fail.
A heated mirror fitted with the element left unplugged is a job half done. It is common.
Switch on, wait, feel the glass. Thirty seconds, and it is the step that separates finished from nearly finished.
Any quote for heated glass should include reconnecting and testing the element. If it does not say so, ask, because the omission is not always accidental.
Covers: where the paint code decides it
The cover is the one part where the answer flips depending on your car's colour.

A mirror cover sits at eye height in direct sun on a car's most-looked-at surface. It is the one place where a colour that is nearly right is worse than not replacing it at all.
Where the paint code lives on your car
Since half the cover conversation depends on it, worth knowing where to find it.
On most vehicles the paint code is on a compliance or build plate, usually in the driver's door jamb, sometimes under the bonnet or in the boot. It is a short alphanumeric code, often labelled colour, paint or C/TR.
Photograph that plate and send it with your mirror photo. It removes the single most common source of a wrong part, and it takes ten seconds.
If the original cover came off in one piece, keep it. On some vehicles the part number is moulded into the back of it, which is the fastest confirmation there is.
Driver-assist mirrors: this is where genuine matters
Blind-spot monitoring, cameras and auto-dimming change the answer completely, and it is worth understanding why rather than taking it on faith.

A blind-spot mirror is not a mirror with a light in it. The indicator is driven by a sensor system that has to agree with the car about what it is seeing [4], and the module behind the glass is specific to the model and often to the build year within that model.
Fit a near-match and you get one of three outcomes: it does not illuminate, it illuminates incorrectly, or the car logs a fault. None of those are acceptable on a safety system, and none are worth the saving.
Auto-dimming and camera glass
Two more cases in the same category, for the same reason.
The common thread: once a mirror is talking to the car rather than just reflecting, the correct part becomes a functional requirement rather than a preference.

How to tell what your mirror has
Thirty seconds standing at the door, and it decides the whole conversation.
An amber triangle or a small light means blind-spot monitoring.
A small lens pointing down is a kerb or surround-view camera.
A light shining onto the ground when you unlock is a puddle lamp.
Positions marked L and R with a memory button means position memory.
If it clears itself, it is heated.

What a wrong part actually costs
The saving on a cheap part is real. So is the failure mode, and it is usually larger.

In every row the outcome is the same: the part gets replaced a second time, and the total is higher than doing it once. That is the actual argument, and it has nothing to do with brand loyalty.

Warranty, and your rights either way
This part is often assumed and rarely checked.
Consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law apply to the part and to the workmanship regardless of whether the part was genuine or aftermarket [2]. A part that fails prematurely, or work that was not carried out with due care and skill, is covered.
Separately, fitting a quality aftermarket part does not void a vehicle's warranty in the way people fear. What matters is whether the part caused the failure being claimed — which is exactly why the driver-assist distinction above is worth taking seriously and the plain-glass one is not.

A supplier who answers all five specifically is quoting a job. One who answers in generalities is quoting a category.

Why the price gap is so much wider than the quality gap
The genuine premium on a mirror part is not primarily a materials story, and understanding why makes the decision easier.
None of that means the genuine part is worse value in the cases where it matters. It means the gap you are looking at is mostly structural, which is why it is so large on plain glass and so much more reasonable on a driver-assist module.
Buying the part yourself: the four ways it goes wrong
A lot of people try this, and we see the results. Worth knowing the failure modes before you spend.
Left and right glass are different curvatures, not mirror images of one another. It is the most common error.
Build-year and trim changes within one model line are frequent and not obvious in a listing.
The glass fits, the element does not plug in, and the mirror is now unheated.
If the part is wrong, the labour was still spent, and nobody carries the cost but you.

Quality aftermarket glass and covers are genuinely equivalent to genuine parts, provided the curvature, the backing plate and any heating connector match your model. Cheap generic parts are a different category and are where the problems come from.
Will an aftermarket mirror void my car's warranty?
No. Consumer guarantees apply to the part and the work regardless [2], and a warranty claim turns on whether the part caused the failure, not on whether it carried a badge.
When should I insist on a genuine part?
Blind-spot, camera and auto-dimming mirrors, and unusual metallic or chrome covers. Everywhere else, quality aftermarket is a reasonable choice.

On plain glass, a great deal — fitted glass starts from $135 where an assembly quote is often several times that. On driver-assist parts the saving is not worth taking.
