Why Is My Side Mirror Shaking or Vibrating?

Short answer: a shaking mirror is a loose part, not a broken mirror. It starts in one of four places — the glass in its backing plate, the housing on its fold mechanism, the adjuster behind the glass, or the mounting base on the door. Three of those four are inexpensive. The trick is working out which one before anyone quotes you for a whole assembly.

A mirror that blurs at eighty is one of the most under-diagnosed faults on a car. It is annoying rather than urgent, so people live with it for months, and by the time they do ask about it they are often quoted for a complete replacement. In almost every case the actual fault is a worn clip, a tired detent or a loose bolt, and it can be sorted at the kerb in well under an hour.
Four places vibration comes from
A side mirror is a stack of separable parts, and each joint between them is somewhere movement can start. Vibration is simply one of those joints having gone slightly slack.

What the symptom tells you
You can narrow it to one or two candidates before anyone touches the car, just by paying attention to when the shaking actually happens.

The five-second test you can do yourself
Park the car, get out, and do these in order. It takes less time to run than to read.
Movement or a click means the backing-plate clips are worn. That is the lowest-cost of the four.
If the whole housing moves at the fold joint, the fold mechanism is the candidate.
Any movement here means the mounting, and that is the one worth dealing with promptly.
If the glass tilts but feels sloppy or over-travels, the adjuster is the suspect.
Loose glass, the most common cause
Mirror glass sits on a plastic backing plate, held by a set of moulded clips and often a bead of adhesive as well. Both age. Heat cycles the plastic, the clips lose their spring, and eventually the glass has a fraction of a millimetre of play.
At rest you would never notice. At road speed, with engine and wind vibration going through the door, that fraction of a millimetre is enough to blur the image completely.
It is also the lowest-cost to fix. Often the glass can be re-seated onto a sound plate. If the clips themselves are gone, replacement glass with a fresh carrier starts from $135 fitted.

Worn fold clutch tabs
Power-fold mirrors hold their open position with small nylon tabs that act as a clutch. They are designed to slip if the mirror is forced by hand, which protects the motor from being stripped.
That protection has a cost. Every slip wears the tabs a little, and after enough cycles — or one firm shove in a tight carpark — they no longer grip firmly enough to hold the housing steady against wind load. The result is a mirror that is fine around town and useless on the motorway.
A loose mounting base
This is the one to take seriously. The mirror bolts to the door through a base plate, usually with three fasteners behind the interior trim. If those have loosened, or the base has been stressed by an impact, the whole mirror moves as a unit.
It matters because a mirror that is loose at the base is a mirror that can eventually detach, and it is also the version most likely to be written up on a safety inspection or a defect notice [5]. A mirror has to be firmly mounted, and an examiner tests exactly that [6].
Adjuster mechanism wear
Behind the glass sits a small gimbal driven by two motors, one for each axis. Over years the gears develop backlash, and the plate they carry can move slightly even when the motors are not running.
This one presents differently from the others: the housing is rock solid, nothing moves when you push it, and yet the reflected image still trembles. If you have eliminated the other three, this is what is left.
The adjuster is a replaceable component in its own right on most vehicles, so this does not automatically mean a new assembly either.
Things that are not the mirror
Two causes people chase for a long time before finding out the mirror was innocent.
Blind-spot mirrors, and why they cause this
The little stick-on convex mirrors sold at auto shops are a frequent contributor. They are legal in Australia when added to an existing compliant mirror rather than replacing part of it, but they add weight to the outer corner of the glass, which is the point furthest from the adjuster.
A backing plate designed for the mass of the glass alone now carries a cantilevered extra load. On a mirror with slightly worn clips, that is enough to turn a stable image into a blurred one at speed.
If you have one fitted and the shaking started afterwards, take it off for a day and see what happens. It is the lowest-cost diagnostic available.
Why it matters more than it feels like it does
A blurred mirror is easy to live with because the brain compensates. That compensation is the problem.
What you actually do with a mirror you cannot read is stop using it, and start turning your head instead. That works fine until the one time it does not. The Australian Road Rules require a driver to have a clear view and proper control [4], and the mirror is the mechanism the vehicle was designed and certified around for that view [1].
There is also the practical point that it will be picked up at the next safety inspection, because “firmly mounted” and “adjusts and holds” are both on the checklist [6].

What we check, in what order
Lowest cost first, always. There is no reason to price an assembly before eliminating a clip.
Push test, then a look at the carrier for cracked or flattened clips.
Listen for grinding, feel for a soft detent, check whether it holds position under load.
Bolts and base plate. Quick to check and the most important to rule out.
Last, because by then we know it is not something simpler and cheaper.
Can you fix a shaking mirror yourself?
Sometimes, and it is worth knowing where the line is.
Removing a stick-on blind-spot mirror is a free fix anyone can do. Re-seating glass that has popped a clip is occasionally possible with careful hand pressure, although mirror glass breaks in an unforgiving way and the fragments are genuinely sharp.
Anything involving the mounting bolts means the door trim comes off, which on a modern car means clips, a wiring loom and sometimes an airbag warning label. That is the point at which the twenty minutes saved is not worth the risk of a broken trim panel.

Why it usually starts in summer
A pattern we see every year. The complaints about loose glass arrive in clusters after a run of hot weather, and the reason is material rather than mechanical.
Mirror glass sits on a plastic backing plate and is held by moulded clips, usually with a bead of adhesive as well. Both the plastic and the adhesive expand and contract with heat. A car parked in the open in a Sydney summer goes through that cycle every single day, and the surface behind a mirror gets considerably hotter than the air temperature.
After enough cycles the clips lose their spring and the adhesive loses its grip. The glass does not fall out, it just develops a fraction of a millimetre of play — which is all it takes.
Vibration after a repair
If your mirror was fine, then somebody replaced the glass, and now it buzzes, the glass is probably not the problem.
It is why we check the backing plate as a separate step rather than treating it as part of the glass job. Fitting good glass to a failing carrier produces a callback, and nobody wants that.
Does a shaking mirror get worse?
Yes, and it accelerates rather than creeping.
Each of the four causes is a joint with a small amount of play in it, and play is self-feeding. A loose glass clip lets the glass move, which levers the remaining clips. A worn fold detent lets the housing buffet, which wears the tabs faster. A loose mounting bolt lets the mirror move, which loosens the others.
None of that is urgent in the way a brake fault is urgent. It does mean the cheap fix has a window, and the window closes.
