Short answer: for BMW side mirror replacement, we can usually replace just the broken piece instead of the whole mirror. That means the mirror glass, the surround ring, the indicator, the bottom trim, or the mirror base, including the electric folding if your mirror has it. Glass for a BMW starts from $175 fitted, and a full BMW assembly is typically $450 to $800 or more, quoted per vehicle.

Need it fitted? We can replace a BMW or European side mirror part at your home or work in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide — see how our mobile service works.

A BMW mirror looks like one sealed unit. It is not. It is a stack of separate parts held together by clips, and a knock in a car park usually breaks one of them. The glass cracks. The ring snaps. The little indicator goes dark. The mirror stops folding.

Many quotes still cover the whole assembly. This guide shows the five pieces you can replace on their own, how to tell which one failed, and what each repair costs. It covers exterior side mirrors only. We do not repair or replace the interior rear-view mirror.

Why a BMW mirror is really five separate parts

Open up a BMW side mirror and you find a layered design. The glass sits in a holder. A surround ring frames it. An indicator lens sits in the housing. A trim piece closes the underside. A base carries the moving parts, including the electric folding on cars that have it.

Each layer is made to be changed on its own. That is useful for you. When a car park knock breaks one layer, the others are usually fine. You only need to pay for the piece that broke.

The five pieces we can replace on their own

Piece What usually goes wrong What it means
Mirror glass Cracked, scratched or missing Housing and motor are usually fine
Surround ring (frame) Snapped clip, cracked or loose ring Glass can stay if it is not damaged
Indicator Lens cracked, light not working Only the indicator needs to change
Bottom trim Cracked or hanging off the underside A cosmetic piece, but it can rattle or catch the wind
Mirror base Loose, floppy or will not fold The folding unit sits here on powered mirrors

In most BMWs these pieces can be replaced one at a time. The exact part depends on the model and year, so we always confirm from a photo first.

How to tell which piece broke

You can often work this out in a minute at the kerb. Start with what you can see, then what you can feel.

1
Look at the glass
A crack, a missing corner or a smashed face means the glass. Nothing else is needed if the housing is intact.
2
Press the frame around the glass
If the ring moves, rattles or has a gap, the ring or its clips have failed.
3
Check the indicator
A cracked lens or a dead light points to the indicator. See our guide on a side mirror indicator that is not working.
4
Try the fold and the adjuster
If the mirror hangs loose, drops, or will not fold in, the base or the folding unit is the likely cause.

Glass: the most common BMW mirror repair

Cracked glass is the one we see most. On a BMW, glass starts from $175 fitted. That is for the glass part, not the whole mirror.

Not every BMW glass is a plain panel. Some are heated. Some are auto-dimming, the same electrochromic idea used in interior mirrors [3]. Some carry a blind-spot warning. The glass must match your car’s equipment, or the feature stops working. Read our guides on auto-dimming mirror glass and on blind-spot mirrors if that sounds like your car.

Surround ring and bottom trim: small pieces, easy to miss

The surround ring is the thin frame that holds the glass edge. The bottom trim closes the underside of the housing. Both are plastic. Both crack when a mirror is clipped by a door, a wall or another car.

A broken ring is not just cosmetic. It can leave the glass loose, and a loose glass buzzes at speed. A broken trim can hang down and catch. The fix is the same for both: a new piece, clipped in, and the rest of the mirror stays.

Why these are worth fixing earlyA small cracked piece lets in water and dust. Left alone, a cheap fix can slowly turn into a bigger one.

The indicator and the base, including electric folding

A BMW mirror indicator is a small lens and light in the housing. When it cracks or dies, you can replace that piece alone. You do not need a new housing.

The mirror base is where the damage gets serious. It carries the joint and, on many cars, the electric folding. When a mirror is hit, the base can be the part that fails. The mirror hangs loose or stops folding, even though the glass looks perfect. We can replace the base, including the electric folding where your mirror has it, rather than the whole assembly.

Our page on electric folding mirror motor repair explains the folding side in more detail.

For comparison, plain mirror glass on most other cars starts from $135 fitted. Every job gets a fixed price from a photo before we come out. For the full price ladder by part, see our side mirror replacement cost guide.

Why we always ask for photos first

BMW mirrors differ by model, year and equipment. Two cars that look alike can use two different parts. So we never sell a mirror part without pictures. A photo of the damage and a photo of the car’s badge is usually enough for us to name the exact part and the exact price.

A real job from our own work: the broken piece is replaced and the rest of the mirror stays on the car.

That is also why we can fix one piece instead of the whole mirror. We see the damage before we plan the job.

Painted cover or plastic trim: what is the difference?

A BMW mirror shows two kinds of outer parts, and they are priced differently. The painted cover is the large shell that matches the car’s body colour. The trims are the smaller plastic pieces around it, such as the surround ring and the bottom trim.

A cover is a bigger part and needs paint to match your car. That is why covers sit at $150 to $300 on our price ladder. A trim piece is smaller and is usually a black or dark plastic part. If only a trim has cracked, you do not need a new cover.

Tell us which piece looks damaged, or just send a photo. We work out the rest.

Heated, auto-dimming, blind-spot and camera mirrors

Many BMWs carry extra features in the mirror. The glass may heat, dim, or carry a blind-spot indicator. Some mirrors also hold a camera. Each feature changes the part you need.

Feature What it changes What we do
Heated glass The glass has a heating element Match the glass to your car
Auto-dimming glass The glass darkens in glare See our auto-dimming guide
Blind-spot indicator A warning light sits in the glass See our blind-spot guide
Camera A camera sits in the housing Quoted per vehicle from a photo

Because of these options, the price of a BMW mirror part moves a lot. Glass for a BMW starts from $175 fitted, and the final price follows the features. We confirm the exact figure from your photo.

A simple guide: what is probably broken?

What you see Likely broken piece Usual fix
Cracked or smashed glass Mirror glass Replace the glass
Loose frame, a visible gap around the glass Surround ring Replace the ring
Cracked lens, dead turn signal Indicator Replace the indicator
Strip hanging under the mirror Bottom trim Replace the trim
Mirror droops, or will not fold in Mirror base or folding unit Replace the base and folding unit

This table is a starting point. A photo lets us confirm it. Sometimes two pieces are damaged together, and we replace both.

What to photograph for a BMW quote

1
The whole mirror, from the front
Stand back far enough to show the glass, the ring and the indicator.
2
The underside
Show the bottom trim and where the mirror meets the door.
3
The car’s details
A photo of the badge and the model, or the year, so we can match the part.
4
What it does now
Tell us if it folds, if the indicator lights, and if the glass dims or heats.

With these four things, we can usually name the part and give you a fixed price without seeing the car in person.

Mistakes that cost BMW owners money

Buying a whole mirror for a cracked glassThe housing, motor and cover were fine. Glass alone would have done it.
Ordering the wrong sideDriver and passenger parts are different. Check before you order.
Ignoring a loose ringA loose frame lets the glass buzz and lets dust in.
Prying clips with the wrong toolBMW trim is held by clips that snap. A wrong tool breaks them.

Most of these are avoidable with a photo and a short check. If you are unsure, send us what you have and ask.

Genuine or aftermarket parts

Owners often ask whether to use genuine or aftermarket parts. The answer depends on the part and on what you want from it. We have a separate guide on aftermarket versus genuine side mirrors that explains the trade-offs.

Other European makes: the same idea applies

If you drive a Mercedes-Benz or an Audi instead, the same questions apply: which piece broke, and does it need the whole assembly? Ask us, and send a photo.

Our pricing for BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi sits in the same band: glass from $175 fitted, with a full assembly typically $450 to $800 or more. See our page on European car side mirror replacement for the full picture.

Can you claim a BMW mirror on insurance?

Many drivers ask whether insurance will pay for a broken mirror. It depends on your policy, your excess and the cost of the repair. Our guide on whether insurance covers a broken side mirror goes through the questions to ask.

Claiming, and how it works with usWe do not bill or deal with insurers directly. You contact us, we do the work, and you claim it back from your insurer yourself. If your policy covers it, you authorise the insurer to pay you and you make the claim.

Fitted where the car is parked

We come to you in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide, within the metro area. Home, work or a car park. We do not travel to the Gold Coast or to regional areas, but we can post parts. We replace exterior side mirrors only, and every job follows the national rules for rear-vision mirrors [1].

Independent repairers can also get the service information they need. Australian law requires car makers to share it on fair terms [2].

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just the glass on a BMW side mirror?

Yes, in most cases. BMW glass starts from $175 fitted. We confirm the exact part from a photo first.

What other BMW mirror parts can be replaced on their own?

On most models, the surround ring, the indicator, the bottom trim and the mirror base, including the electric folding if the mirror has it.

How much does a full BMW mirror assembly cost?

Typically $450 to $800 or more, depending on the model and its features. We quote a fixed price from a photo.

My BMW mirror will not fold. Do I need a new mirror?

Often not. The fault is usually in the base or the folding unit, and we can replace that part rather than the whole assembly.

Why does my new glass not heat or dim?

The glass must match your car’s equipment. Heated, auto-dimming and blind-spot glass are different parts. We match the part to your car.

Do I need to leave the car with you?

No. We come to you and fit the part where the car is parked.

Do you work on the interior rear-view mirror?

No. We replace exterior side mirrors only.

Do you replace the painted cover on a BMW?

Yes. Covers are $150 to $300, matched to your car. If only a plastic trim is damaged, we replace the trim instead.

Can you fix a BMW mirror that has a camera in it?

We quote camera mirrors per vehicle from a photo, because the part and the price depend on the car.

Do you travel outside the big cities?

We work in the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide metro areas only. We do not travel to regional areas, but we can ship parts.
